Personeel van penitentiaire Inrichting Esserheem in Veenhuizen geeft zaterdag een demonstratie hoe een opstandige gevangene in een isoleercel tot bedaren wordt gebracht. Op de Open Dag Dienst Justitiele Inrichtingen kunnen bijna 12.000 mensen een bezoek brengen aan een inrichting om zo een beeld te krijgen van het werken en leven achter de muren van een gevangenis, tbs-kliniek of jeugdinrichting.

ZOETERMEER - Bij een verdachte worden electronisch vingerafdrukken afgenomen, woensdag in de gevangenis in Zoetermeer. Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin van Justitie nam hier een nieuwe identificatiemethode in gebruik. Het doel van deze nieuwe methode is het vaststellen en controleren van de identiteit van verdachten en veroordeelden, zodat identiteitsfraude kan worden voorkomen. ANP PHOTO ED OUDENAARDEN

Het Pieter Baan Centrum, Nederlands Instituut voor Forensische Psychiatrie en Psychologie, opent vandaag haar deuren in het kader van de vijfde nationale Open Dag van de Dienst Justitiele Inrichtingen (DJI). In het Pieter Baan Cenrum verblijven 32 observandi in vier woongroepen van 8 personen. Aan de Open Dag doen dit jaar 61 justitiele inrichtingen mee. Over het hele land kunnen ruim 12.000 mensen een bezoek brengen aan een inrichting om zichzelf een oordeel te vormen over het leven en werken achter de muren van een gevangenis, tbs-kliniek of jeugdinrichting. GRONINGEN - In Groningen wordt vrijdag een nieuw cellencomplex gepresenteerd. Een aanzienlijk deel van de celwanden bestaat uit glas. In de cel van het nieuwe cellen complex, kan de gedetineerde gebruik maken van een info kastje links in beeld. Barnes was convicted of the 1989 murder of his girlfriend. French President Jacques Chirac asked former US President George Bush 24 February to intervene and save Barnes' life, in light of new evidence discovered by lawyers in 1997 which they said showed Barnes was framed by police investigating the murder. A pardon for Barnes must come from Texas Gov. George W. Bush, son of the former president and Republican presidential hopeful. Restoration work going on in former prison. Three cells which housed women accused of witchcraft have been discovered in the Palazzo Steri, a former prison building in Palermo. Among other prisoners in the 1600s and 1700s, these women were submitted to torture, inquisitions and often received sentences to be burnt to death. Experts from Palermo Univerity have uncovered scribblings, pictures and desperate appeals from the prisoners on the walls of the cells.
